I’m Austin Weng, a mechanical engineering student at San Diego State University with an emphasis in bioengineering, graduating in May 2028. I grew up in the Bay Area and came to San Diego to study how engineering can improve people’s lives.
What excites me most is where technology meets the human body. I’m especially interested in medical devices: designing hardware that is precise, reliable and built around the people who depend on it. Most of my learning happens hands-on, through CAD, rapid prototyping and mechatronics projects like my self-stabilizing gimbal, which was inspired by robotic radiation therapy. I’m looking for opportunities in medtech product design, R&D and manufacturing.
Rugby
I picked up rugby when I got to SDSU, having never played before, and it quickly became one of the best parts of college. The team is where I’ve made many of my closest friends and connections. Learning a new sport from scratch taught me discipline, how to communicate under pressure, and how to keep getting better when things are hard. Now, as Vice President on the club’s executive board, I’m learning what it takes to lead a team on and off the field.
Soccer
Soccer was a big part of my life growing up, and it still is. Some of my favorite days are spent playing pickup with friends.
The outdoors
I’m happiest outside. I’ve gone on backpacking trips through Death Valley, along the Abel Tasman Coast Track on New Zealand’s South Island, and into the High Sierra in Yosemite. Each one reminded me how good it feels to unplug, carry everything you need, and earn the view.
Lifting and nutrition
Training is one of my biggest passions. I’m part of the Science Based Lifting community, which focuses on building muscle using principles backed by research. I apply the same attention to detail to nutrition: eating whole foods, tracking micronutrients, and optimizing what I eat to support recovery and performance.
TV show favorites
When I’m winding down, I’m usually watching anime. A few favorites: Hunter x Hunter, Jujutsu Kaisen and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Some other favorite TV shows of mine: Parks & Recreation, Community, and Brooklyn 99
